John F. Kennedy: Portrait of a President
Hugh Sidey
Deutsch, 36s.

Kennedy quotes, chat and New Frontier anecdotes. Kennedy campaigning, relaxing, Kennedy and Cuba, Laos, the Wall, K and K in Vienna, Kennedy in conference with lists of advisers. All this and more, in 420 pages with a front-cover photograph of K himself. What is missing is analysis. What in detail were his aims, what pressures acted on him, what was his relation with industry, what did he achieve? To be fair, Sidey does not claim to answer these questions. All he presents is a running picture of Kennedy at work and play, the Kennedy way of life. No doubt there are those who find this detail interesting, and some even who call it the stuff of politics. They are unlikely to see this review.
