Subject: appreciation

Hello Andy,

I just wanted to write to say how much I appreciate your site. It offers something completely unique, I think. The first thing I came across were your excellent commentaries on Hegel's Logic. But I am particularly interested in Ilyenkov. I first came across him when I bought a copy of Dialectical Logic in a bookshop in Brixton, London. Since then I've always been on the lookout for his works, and have found The Dialectics of the Abstract and the Concrete..., and Leninist Dialectics and the Metaphysics of Positivism. This morning I found The Concept of the Ideal, which I'd never seen before, on your site. You don't have any more of his works up your sleeve, do you?

In connection with Ilyenkov, I've also read a book by David Bakhurst, Consciousness and Revolution in Soviet Philosophy, but I wasn't too keen on it to be honest. He doesn't seem to have much sympathy with marxism, which is perhaps a bit of a disadvantage in trying to understanding Ilyenkov (not to mention Marx and Lenin). Bakhurst says at one point that Dialectical Logic is badly translated - do you agree? Unfortunately I can't read Russian, so I don't know how faithful it is to the original, but I can vouch for the clarity and style of the English version. On the other hand I did find some parts of The Dialectics of the Abstract rather heavier going than necessary, because of the translation.

Anyway, I won't take up any more of your time. I just wanted to let you know that all your hard work was much appreciated!

Best regards,

Malcolm Eden

I have a question about the people mentioned in subject. How would you compare Hegels perception of history with Nietzsches critique of history. Furthermore want context could these view upon history be linked with the period of the 19th century. I would be glad if you answered these questions.

Hope to hear from you.

Date: Mon, 04 Dec 2000

Hi,

I'm Ingmar Nieuwold (23) from the Netherlands.

I am trying to find out Hegel's point of view towards New Age (I know it isn't easy to define New Age (but I defined it as a way of life where an important role is being played by the "I saw the light" experience where knowledge comes in an instant).

I don't study philosophy so it's very hard to find the right literature or articles/papers. (I could try to read every book Hegel has written but this is not a subject I'm graduating on so that takes a lot of time next to my own study (physical movement science)

I was hoping You could (perhaps) give me some help on this issue.

I hope You like the idea of helping me out and that You like, and can, tell me more about this subject.

Thanks,

Ingmar

PS. If you like to reply could you please (also) send it to Ingmar@pavao.myweb.nl. thanks!!

Dear Sir, I am looking for a statement by Hegel which, as I can translate it from an Italian translation of the original, says: "The people of the time, the dominator, is each time that people who has conceived the highest concept of spirit". Abbagnano, the Italian philospher, quotes these words with the following reference: Lesson on the Philosophy of History, p. 55 (of the Italian translation, of course) I wonder wheather you can help me in locating this quotation in an English translation. I read Lectures on the Philosophy of History translated by Sebree, and I could not find it. My best regards

Andy,
Great website first of all. I have been looking through it for the past three or four days and I can't get enought of it! I have a question for you. In what ways do you think that the analysis of history in the Communist Manifesto draws on Hegel's theory of state and society, as stated in the Philosophy of Right? And in what ways do you think that the Communist Manifesto departs from Hegel?
I am interested to know how you would determine this relationship. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I happened to come upon your page about Hegel, and first of all I feel obliged to congratulate you for its content but structure as well. I am very interested in Hegel's ideas and I like to read some of his work, but since my native languange is Greek, I would prefer a Greek translation - otherwise I would prefer reading solely the contents of your site. I am especially interested in the thesis, antithesis, synthesis way of thinking, but I wouldn't like to step into deep water right away. So any suggestion on where -which titles- should I start reading first would be most welcome.

I found your short course Hegel, Marx & Derrida, on the net. It sounds wonderful. The idea of bringing philosophy to the general public is excellent. I wonder if you have made tapes of these lectures and this course. If you have I would love to purchase it and use it here as a way to involve the interested public in philosophy. I am teaching philosophy at San Francisco State University but I believe that the public, at large, needs access to these ideas. A short weekend course is a wonderful vehicle.

Hello Mr.Andy,
How are you? hoping you for the best.
I'm student of philosophy.Nowadays,I've stuck with Hegel's philosophy.I've been trying to understand his phenomenology.
I read your article "Phenomenology of mind",but .I'm still confused with the term "conciousness".
What he means by "conciuosness"?
It regards human or God?
How he differentiates "concious" , "self-concious", "natural concious" ?

I've asked this questions to many philosophers, but it is a surprise none of them appeared to know about Hegel's Philosophy. Why is his philosophy kept in so much darkness & mostly unknown? Perhaps his philosophy reminds Marxism & Marxism has been a great threat to capitalists.

Please help me clarify this concept.will be thankful to you.

Dear Andy

As someone who is deeply immersed in Hegel/Marxism I dont know if you will appreciate this notice, but I think you will.

It is my pleasure to announce the resurgence of traditional metaphysics. A definitive, comprehensive metaphysics resumes from where GWF Hegel's speculative metaphysics ended in 1831. Sorry about the delay but history had some experiences to help us better understand Hegel.

Let me extend an invitation to my website http://www.logos-logic.com/ where you may learn of the etymologically correct definition of logic and its associated metaphysic, [and yes, it goes all the way].

From my understanding, the dialectic does not finish with Marxism. We probably wont agree on many points but you should have the opportunity to test my logic.

Thank you for your informative site.

Subject: Hegel

Andy,

While working on a book, Shake the Faith, I discovered that my 'picture of the world' bears some resemblance to Hegel's. Had he concentrated on concrete (reality) to symbolic he might have come up with a similiar approach. Specifically, that the flow of energy=thesis, that the relationship of matter=anti-thesis and that evolving order=synthesis. That as energy flows it alters the relationship of matter and that in turn will alter the flow of energy, back and forth it goes creating an evolving order - that is intrinsic to the energy and matter, yet extractable in a symbolic form.

This lens can then be used to look at any facet of existence. With life, it is flow of energy=enzyme catalysis, relationship of matter=cellular encapsulation and structure, evolving order=DNA encryption....with consciousness, FOE=emotional judgement, ROM=analytical understanding, EO=creative imagination.

One of the consequences of this understanding is that we can see DNA as being a symbolic reference to reality - once removed. While consciousness is a symbolic reference to reality that is twice removed. Being twice removed allows our consciousness to become 'untethered' and roam beyond the 'here and now'.

Of even greater import is that the symbolic realm can become confused. A modification to DNA or physically to the brain can result in poor interaction with reality. Plus, the untethering of the consciousness provides a vulnerability that can become confused by making false or invalid associations regarding reality.

The thrust of my book is that the immaturity of human consciousness along with the differing advancemnt of people's consciousness combined with early experiences regarding surplus so as to promote the development of conceptual systems (beliefs) that enables the exploitation of humans by humans.

That these conceptual systems (economic, political, religious) are a form of human programming that takes advantage of our consciousness' vulnerability and allows the shifting of entropy and wealth (creation). But of course, these beliefs drive us away from ourselves and make us sick as well as creating an unjust society.

How do you see this as relating to Hegel and your own understanding?

Subject: Reading Hegel
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000

Dear sir,

I want to thank you for the perspectives your web-pages have opened in my process of learning. I am a professor of philosophy in Spain, and have been many years -too many, unfortunately- studying the work of French thinkers -most of all,Foucault and Deleuze- until that, last year, I went to their roots (Nietzsche) and could unterstand the "reasons" of theses "philosophies". It has not been an easy task. I read most of Nietzsche's nachgelassene Fragmente and now I see clearly that there is a break in history of philosophy: what I call "nomadic" thinking (with irony) and "dialectical" method. At the beginning of this course I reread a good deal of "Time and Being" and found it contaminated with "nomadic" thought.

Since november I have been studying Kant's theory of knowledge, and two months ago I began the reading of Hegel's "logic". I found very motivating the way Hegel reintegrates Kant's critique of understanding (categories-laws of connecting them,...) into the dialectic reason. My project is to compare Nietzsche's and Kant-Hegel's way of working the scientific concept of the forces (die Kräfte). It is, I believe, the breaking point which puts "nomadic" and "dialectic" thinking apart. Their politics (their idea of what a human being is) are based or reflected from this conception on.

My knowledge of marxism is very poor (we didn't study it at University). I have read Marx manuscripts of 1844 and some books by Marcure (Reason and Revolution) and Lukàcs (die Zerstörung der Vernunft).

Which text should I read to understand marxism in our century,( and after the collapse of soviet regime) but not only from a purely theoretical point of view but also practical?

What is nowadays left for a political proposal from marxim?

Well, sorry for my poor knowledge of English writting.

Yours sincerely

Dear Andy,

I am writing a paper exploring Hegel's notion that an irrational state does not exist, or rather is not possible. Could you point me in any direction.
I am a Hegel novice, I exceptionally green for that matter, BUT he rocks my world!

Thanks for your exceptional work.

HI, I'm trying to write a short paper on Hegel's idea of dialectical change. Can you direct me to a specific article on your site where I might find a better understanding of the concept?

Thanks,

Dear Andy,

How very disappointing that I missed the Hegel weekend conference.

I failed to mention yesterday how very much I enjoy your web pages. I used to be able to go to the Marxist Archive at the Colorado University but recently there seems to be a problem accessing it. Thank you very, very much for the trouble you have taken with such a marvellous resource as your website.

warm regards

Dear Andy:

Are you familiar with any works that deal with Hegel's dialectic on Martin Luther King, Jr? I have been doing some research on how King was a master and synthesizing polarized traditions, and I am hoping to find more information on how Hegel's dialectic proved to be a helpful tool in King's thought.

Thanks,
Russel

Hegel's writes extensively on Morality in The Phenomenology, it is my understanding that he is critiquing Kant. Can you either explain briefly his argument against Kant or direct me to another source. Thank You.

Subject: Q: Hegel in Buddenbrooks by Mann?

Hi,

My name is Emily and I am a humanities student at San Jose State University. We are reading Buddenbrooks by T. Mann in which there appears a reference that I suspect is to Hegel but I'm not sure. One of the characters, Thomas, reads a chapter of an unnamed philosopher entitled, "Concerning Death and Its Relation to the Indestructibility of our Essential Nature." I perused the History... by Russell, the section on the 19th century, and the discussion on Hegel seemed to fit some of the musings of the Thomas character. I haven't been able to confirm my suspicion. This isn't a huge deal, but I like philosophy and would like to further understand Mann and his characters. Can you help me?

Thanks, Emily (shigaloo@cs.com)

Dear Andy,
Myself and two graphic designers are currently engaged in a piece of work which involves the quote "omne trium perfectum".
I have so far managed to figure out that it is connected with the theory of thesis, antithesis and synthesis, but in my eternal ignorance have still failed to figure out the literal translation of the quote.
I would be extremely grateful if you could enlightenment me!
many thanks,

Subject: Georg Hegel

Hello. I need help with a question I must answer for one of my college courses. My problem is that I don't have much of a philosophical mind and much as I try to. Anyway, I need to find out what Georg Friedrick Hegel's concept of idealism was and his contributions to education. I've read that he focused on three major aspects: logic, nature, and spirit. I'm trying to understand "dialectic". I know it has something to do with thesis, antithesis, with the result being a synthesis. How does all this fit in with idealism and education. Please help me. I'm really having a hard time with this. Thanks.

Subject: on Derrida
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000

I have been browsing through the notes on the course you are organising on Hegel, Marx and Derrida, and have felt in need to drop you a line on the matter. I am a student, and I have been writing a short essay on Derrida and the sophists for some time. My own perspective, as a convinced marxist, is hardly deconstructive, but I find many interesting, and dialectical, aspects in Derrida which I think are crucial to a sensible understanding of his work and which, as far as I know, have not recieved the attention they deserve. In my essay I take isssue with some of the most banal readings of deconstruction as some kind of gimmicky sophistry, because I myself have been shocked for a while at the surprisingly hegelian strokes Derrida delivers every now and then. I had not found many people, apart from Christopher Norris of Cardiff University, who had drawn attention to this point, as the common opinion among my teachers and most readers here in Spain is that Derrida is somehow the devil reincarnated; therefore I am very pleasantly surprised to find news on your work on the net. Sincerely,

Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000

Dear Dr. Andy:

Good morning!
Would you give me your opinion why Hegel classified the subject of "the State" into the area of "Ethical Life" in his Philosophy of Right? Is there any his idea on the state as a part of political entities themselves, rather than the "Ethical" life?
Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
Taeoon Jang.

Hi, Andy--
You have a terrific site--but I'm doing some philosophy work and I am interested in writing about the mutual exclusion of "Geist" and "Zeitgeist" in that "Geist" would supersede the temporal. Okay. So where can I learn more about these ideas (I'm developing a thesis without much prior knowledge about Hegel). Thanks for your help; I eagerly await your response.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for a wonderful and very comprehensive website on Hegel.
I have a very precise question. I'm currently writing an essay on the dialectics of desire, within the framework of some studies on psychoanalysis. I have a problem with one of my references. I want to insert hegel's dialectics of master and slave (as we say in French), but I cannot find in which of his works he mentions this concept. Is it in the Phenomenology or in the science of logics, or is it a more general concept that is not specifically developped in any of his works in particular?
Your help in the matter is greatly appreciated.
anne
