EROL Note: In the April 23, 1982 issue of UNITY, the League of Revolutionary Struggle (M-L) published a special supplement dedicated to materials on the debate among pro-China forces about the nature of the period and tasks facing U.S. Marxist-Leninists. The supplement contained excerpts from the LRS’s Critique of RWH’s “Realignment, Reagan and Our Tasks;” Response to debate on period and tasks by RWH member, by Wes Harding; and Response to Wes Harding of the Revolutionary Workers Headquarters (all of which are published in full on EROL) together with excerpts from the following documents.

UNITY Introduction: Following are excerpts from responses written by various groups and individuals as part of the first topic of the Marxist-Leninist debate series – the period of the U.S. revolutionary struggle and the tasks of communists.
This debate was initiated by the Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist), the League of Revolutionary Struggle (M-L) and the Revolutionary Workers Headquarters in late 1981. The purpose of the debate is to clarify views within the Marxist-Leninist movement towards greater unity among Marxist-Leninists and towards the clarification of a correct line for the U.S. revolution. Besides period and tasks, the debate will cover the national question, labor and trade union question, woman question, international situation and communist organization.
Written positions have been issued on the first topic by a number of groups, including individual members of the CPML, the League for a Labor Republic (formerly The New Voice), the League of Revolutionary Struggle, Revolutionary Workers Headquarters and some independent Marxist-Leninists. The publication of these papers has also generated a number of responses, adding more substance and dimension to the debate. UNITY is printing here excerpts from a number of the responses that have been written. We hope this will contribute to the process of clarifying political line and the struggle for Marxist-Leninist unity.
Readers interested in obtaining the full version of any of the responses excerpted here should write to UNITY.
