Wrangel affair

In 1927 the Soviet police renounced the Left Opposition by claiming that a "Wrangel officer" (a reference to Piotr N. Wrangel, general in the white army) was seeking contact with its members.

The claim was correct, however the Soviet police was forced to admit that the alleged Wrangel officer had been recruited by the Soviet police. Regardless of the failure (one among many), the first members of the Left Opposition were kicked out of the Communist Party and deported later that year.
